NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

What are your New Year resolutions?

Studies show you’re more likely to commit to a decision, plan or project and see it to a successful completion if it’s written down and we make others aware. It's almost cliche, almost everyone you ask what they want to do would say, "I want to make the world a better place".

Well, the reality is the world cannot and will not be better, if we do not become better persons. So let our resolutions make us better persons, then we bring to life the better world we dream and wish for.

Please drop your comments and re-share. To a better world, cheers!

NELSON MANDELA DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL

Nelson Mandela
It has been 3 weeks since former South African President and Icon, Nelson Mandela was admitted to the hospital.  He was discharged on Boxing Day, December 26 from a hospital in Pretoria, the South African capital. Mr. Mandela, fondly called “Madiba”- his clan name, was admitted to the hospital Saturday, December 8, he was diagnosed with a lung infection and underwent gallstone surgery.

The procedure was successful according to his doctors and although he has not yet fully recovered, he has made steady progress. A medical team will remain with the 94-year old Nobel Laureate to provide “home based high care” at his residence in the Johannesburg neighbourhood of Houghton.

I wish him a full and speedy recovery, as do billions around the world.

Dear Diary...Traffic!

First of all, I apologize this is coming late. This was supposed to have been posted about 48hours ago. I hope I've been forgiven? Without further ado, lets go straight to the story of my day and boy what a day it was.

Traffic! Traffic!! Traffic!!! That was the theme for today. Unfortunately, I didn't get the memo; I would have made some changes to my schedule. Oh well, let me take you to the beginning.

I woke up at 6am. I conducted some early morning business, placed an order for the delivery of some goods later in the day. I scheduled it for 5-ish, I planned to go out you see, I figured I should be back by then. I was to meet my dad on the mainland sometime before noon, so I set out in my car for the 1 hour or so journey. As if it was a sign of things to come, I spent about 75mins on a journey that should take 60mins. But I didn't think much of it, since I wasted some time by taking a route I was unfamiliar. I was in limbo for a while, tried using GPS; it didn't help much as the route it suggested was blocked off. Then I remembered a saying common among my people, the Yoruba people, it says, "the man who knows how to ask for directions never gets lost". So, I asked the next person I saw, a young boy, he pointed out the way. Coincidentally, it was a path I had passed taken and I remember thinking, "this could be the way", remind to listen to my inner voice. Anyway, I made my way to my dad's office and after a while we set out together to conduct some business and effect some transactions at the bank.

This time the Traffic was not of cars but of people in form of a long queue in the banking hall. I suppose since it was the last day of the week, a lot of people were making last minute transactions, as were we. It took us another hour or more to complete our transaction and head back to our individual businesses.

I needed to make some purchases, so I made a stop at the market. With the boot and back of my car, filled with the stuff I just bought, I set out on the trip back to the island, it was 2pm. Remember I said the trip should take about one hour? I didn't get home until past 5! An extra 2hrs on the road. It was a hot day, 33ºC!
Traffic on my way back to the island

Exhausted, thirsty, skin covered with a thin film of dust (it's harmattan season in these parts), I finally made it home. Showered, had something to eat and went back to work. I had a few hours left before Close of Business and there was still quite a bit to do.

N.B: I obviously didn't fill my diary *covering face*. I'll make it up to you.

Dear Diary...

Alarm rings at 6am! Mentally reviewed my plans for the day. I was expecting a text message which was supposed to initiate a set of actions, like a chain reaction; a precursor to a pathway. I kept looking at my phone, even took it with me to the bathroom, eagerly waiting for the beep that indicates a text. Every time it beeped, I’d grab the phone only to see it wasn’t the message I was expecting.
View from my car window
I made a few calls, switched on my laptop and to my dismay my Internet connection was down!
For me, business as usual is so not appropriate. Everyday is unique and has its different challenges, deadlines and responsibilities. Today was a good day.

Dear Diary: Days to Christmas

Dear diary....Whew! Finally got that out of the way. I had been staring at the blank page for several minutes, clueless about how to begin. "Dear diary" just popped up and considering I haven't opened a diary this year, I think it's an appropriate opening. Don't you agree?

I have kept diaries in the past, though irregularly, no small feat for someone like me. I found it easy to keep a diary when I had a routine. A typical day will go something like this; wake up at 6am, get ready for work, sometimes have breakfast, work till evening, back home by 7pm, dinner, watch some TV, prepare for the next day, write in my diary, AOB and I'm in bed by midnight. Now, those were times when I had a fairly regular schedule and it was easy to maintain a set of duties, even such things as daily writing in my diary.

I must confess there were times when I missed a day or two and on occasions missed a whole week or so but those were few and far between. They were such times when I had huge demand on my time and had to work late nights due for one reason or the other.

Anyway, back to the present. As it turns out I didn't keep a diary this year, so I came up with this idea,  to keep one for a short period, the days leading to Christmas, starting today. To make it fun and keep me committed to it, I am putting it up on my blog. I'll be taking pictures when I can and maybe even video. You are welcome to join in, comment and share how you are spending your Days to Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Choosing Happiness

The key to happiness is this: dedicate yourself to the development of your natural talents and abilities by doing what you love to do, and doing it better and better in the service of a cause that is greater than yourself.
This is a big statement and a big commitment. Being happy requires that you define your life in your own terms and then throw your whole heart into living your life to the fullest. In a way, happiness requires that you be perfectly selfish in order to develop yourself to a point where you can be unselfish for the rest of your life.
Happy people
So choose to be happy, today and everyday, regardless of what life throws at you and watch the benefits ripple through space and time.

The Weakest Link

"In every chain of reasoning, the evidence of the last conclusion can be no greater than that of the weakest link of the chain, whatever may be the strength of the rest." In other words, "a chain is as strong as its weakest link".
